James Nyamwongo, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Nairobi Hospital, has been suspended indefinitely following his compulsory leave earlier this week.
The decision was made by board members from the Kenya Hospital Association (KHA), which oversees the facility, who voted to put him on annual leave.
In a letter dated December 30, KHA Chairman Dr. Chris Bichage stated that Nyamwongo would not return to the office until the Board of Management provides further guidance.
This action follows a letter dated November 22 regarding his leave, which noted that the decision was made due to “unavoidable circumstances.”
Nyamwongo’s suspension comes after a series of boardroom conflicts within the KHA. In July, members of the association petitioned for an extraordinary general meeting, citing a loss of confidence in the leadership of the board, particularly in Dr. Bichage and Vice Chairman Philemon Mwaisaka.
The petitioners accused the board of breaching its legal and fiduciary duties, claiming they had made decisions against the hospital’s interests, including issuing tenders contrary to the hospital’s procurement manual and securing overseas loans totaling approximately Ksh 2 billion without proper approval.
Further complaints were raised regarding the board’s management of the hospital, alleging poor governance, corruption, mismanagement, and unethical recruitment practices.
In response, Dr. Bichage issued a statement in September 2024, denying the allegations and labeling them as a smear campaign from frustrated individuals who had failed to manipulate the board for personal gain.
He challenged those making the accusations to provide concrete evidence.
Regarding the hospital’s financial status, Dr. Bichage assured stakeholders that the institution’s finances were stable, with bed occupancy averaging over 70%, and staff salaries being paid on time.
He also addressed the allegations of nepotism and corruption, stressing that the hospital’s recruitment practices were fair and transparent.
Despite these assurances, the ongoing board disputes, including those concerning the hospital’s management and financial challenges, have raised concerns about the future of Nairobi Hospital.
