Nation in tears: Infant’s body stolen in suitcase as mother travels with it for burial

A heartbreaking incident in Uganda has left many stunned and outraged after a grieving mother lost the body of her infant in a shocking act of theft during a routine journey home.

Kimuli Jjumba, a resident of Nansana Municipality, was traveling to her village to bury her five-month-old daughter, Paulina Namigade, when tragedy struck in the most unimaginable way.

Already devastated by the loss of her child, Kimuli now faces a second nightmare, her baby’s body was stolen.

According to Kimuli, she had just been discharged from Mulago Hospital following her daughter’s death.

With limited financial means and no access to a hearse or private transport, she made the painful decision to carry her baby’s body in a suitcase as she boarded a public taxi, a Toyota Hiace (registration number UBL 104 Z), heading toward her home village.

The journey took a tragic turn near Matugga. Kimuli briefly stepped out of the taxi to purchase phone airtime, hoping to inform relatives of her arrival.

In those few moments, the taxi drove off, along with her suitcase.

Panic immediately set in.

“I lost my child, and now I’ve lost her body too,” Kimuli reportedly said, overcome with grief.

The incident has sparked widespread anger and sympathy, with many calling for swift action to locate the missing remains and bring those responsible to justice.

Authorities are yet to confirm whether the vehicle or suspect has been identified, but investigations are ongoing.

This tragic story has ignited conversations about poverty, dignity in death, and the desperation many families face when they cannot afford proper funeral arrangements.

For Kimuli, what was meant to be a final journey of farewell has turned into an agonizing search for closure.
