The National Transport and Safety Authority has urged motorists to exercise caution during the Easter holidays, announcing heightened enforcement measures to curb road accidents across the country.
In a statement released on April 2, Director General Nashon Kondiwa called on all road users to prioritize safety during the festive period.
“Fellow motorists, as we commemorate this Easter season, I urge every driver and passenger to prioritize safety on our roads,” Kondiwa said.
“The NTSA, in close collaboration with the National Police Service, has intensified enforcement operations nationwide to reduce fatal crashes.”
He highlighted key risky behaviors contributing to road fatalities, warning against speeding, drunk driving, and driver fatigue. “Speeding remains a leading cause of death—slow down and adhere to posted limits. If you have consumed alcohol, do not get behind the wheel,” he cautioned.
Kondiwa also stressed the importance of proper driving discipline and vehicle maintenance. “Failure to maintain lane discipline, dangerous overtaking, and using unroadworthy vehicles puts all road users at risk. Vehicles with defective brakes, worn-out tyres, or faulty lighting will be impounded immediately,” he warned.
Motorists were further advised to take precautions in case of breakdowns. “Ensure you park safely off the road and place warning triangles at a sufficient distance,” he added.
The authority announced the deployment of traffic officers, speed cameras, and sobriety checkpoints at strategic locations nationwide.
“Remember, every life matters. Let us arrive alive and celebrate with our loved ones. Drive responsibly,” Kondiwa concluded.
The advisory comes as thousands of Kenyans prepare to travel upcountry and to holiday destinations during the Easter period, a time often marked by increased traffic on major highways.
