Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama has officially announced his retirement from professional football, ending a remarkable career that spanned over 15 years across Europe and North America.
In a heartfelt message, Wanyama reflected on his rise from humble beginnings. “Four different countries, six different clubs—a boy from Muthurwa with a big dream, carrying a nation’s pride every time I stepped onto the pitch,” he said.
Wanyama began his professional career in 2007 with Kenyan club AFC Leopards before moving abroad to Sweden’s Helsingborgs IF in 2008. He made 37 appearances for Helsingborgs, scoring 1 goal, and quickly attracted attention from European scouts.
In 2011, he joined Celtic FC, where he made 91 appearances and scored 13 goals. His standout moment came in the UEFA Champions League when he scored against Barcelona, cementing his reputation on the big stage.
Wanyama then moved to the English Premier League, signing for Southampton FC in 2013. He made 85 appearances and scored 4 goals during his time at the club.
In 2016, he joined Tottenham Hotspur, where he played 97 matches and scored 7 goals, including a memorable long-range strike against Liverpool that won the Premier League Goal of the Month award.

Wanyama later moved to Major League Soccer side CF Montréal in 2020, where he made over 100 appearances and scored 6 goals, also serving as team captain.
On the international stage, Wanyama earned over 60 caps for the Harambee Stars, captaining the side and leading them to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations tournament.
He paid tribute to those who supported him throughout his journey. “To my family, friends, agent, the fans, and the coaching staff that helped me throughout my career—thank you for walking this journey with me,” he said.
Looking ahead, the 33-year-old revealed his next step. “I now take my next step into coaching, where I will be completing my UEFA A License this year,” he announced.
Wanyama’s retirement marks the end of an era for Kenyan football, with his legacy standing as one of the most successful careers by a Kenyan player on the global stage.
