Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has issued a stern warning to anyone from the region who chooses to vote against the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, labeling them as “traitors.”
Speaking at a Sunday service in Nyeri County, Governor Kahiga reaffirmed the region’s unwavering loyalty to Gachagua, stating that they would fully support him in the 2027 general elections.
“Hapa hatutaki wasaliti. Kuchukua hicho kiti wewe ni msaliti na sisi tuko nyuma ya Gachagua. We remain solidly behind him,” Kahiga declared.
The Governor also cautioned any individuals from the region who might be appointed to Cabinet Secretary (CS) positions to stay in Nairobi and avoid returning to Nyeri, warning that they would be branded as traitors for collaborating with the State.
“Kama kuna kiti kitalewa Nyeri ni kimoja na ni cha President. Sisi hatutaki mawaziri.
Tunyang’anywe Deputy President tuletewe mawaziri?” he posed, expressing frustration at any perceived betrayal.
Additionally, Governor Kahiga addressed the ongoing political rivalry surrounding Gachagua, urging political opponents to cease their attacks.
He referenced the violent incident in Limuru on November 28, where Gachagua was targeted by a group of armed assailants who disrupted a public event.
“If you see us being silent leave us alone, we are following what we have been told to do.
If he says we speak then we will, but for now, he has said we remain quiet. You impeached him, now leave him alone,” Kahiga stated.
In a related interview, Gachagua described the Limuru attack as a “well-planned attempt on my life.”
He noted the absence of uniformed police officers and the withdrawal of his security detail a week prior to the attack.
Gachagua also claimed that police in unmarked vehicles blocked escape routes for attendees and accused the Kiambu County security team of facilitating the attack by providing a “safe corridor” for the assailants.
The political fallout from Gachagua’s impeachment has sparked intense debate, with leaders becoming divided into factions either defending or supporting President William Ruto’s decision to remove him from office.
