ODM party leader and Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga has been hospitalised again, raising fresh concern over the health of the veteran politician as his family reportedly considers seeking specialised medical care abroad.
The 83-year-old politician was reportedly admitted to a Nairobi hospital after developing health complications, with strict restrictions placed on visitors allowed to see him.
The development comes at a politically sensitive moment for the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), which is navigating internal disagreements and positioning itself ahead of the 2027 General Election.
According to reports, Oburu’s family is considering flying him to the United Kingdom for specialised treatment.
However, the exact nature of his medical condition has not been publicly disclosed.
Oburu’s hospital admission
Reports indicate that Oburu’s latest hospitalisation followed an earlier admission in August.
Several Kenyan media outlets reported that he was initially admitted on August 22 and discharged four days later before being readmitted on August 26 after his condition required further medical attention.
Doctors were said to have advised him to get adequate rest after experiencing severe fatigue.
One of the reports placed his latest admission at Nairobi Hospital from August 29, describing it as his second hospitalisation within two weeks.
The publication also reported that the family was considering taking him to the UK for specialist care.
Neither Oburu’s family, ODM nor the hospital has publicly released detailed information about the condition that led to his admission.
Visitors reportedly restricted
The situation surrounding the ODM leader has attracted further attention because of the tight restrictions reportedly imposed around his hospital room.
Several politicians who allegedly attempted to visit him were reportedly unable to gain access, with hospital management limiting regular visits to his two spouses and children.
The restrictions have inevitably fuelled speculation among Kenyans, particularly because Oburu has remained largely out of the public spotlight in recent days.
However, the absence of a detailed medical statement means that speculation about the exact nature or severity of his illness remains unconfirmed.
Relative gives update on Oburu
Amid growing public interest, a close relative reportedly confirmed on Tuesday, September 1, that Oburu remained under medical care and was stabilising.
The relative spoke to the press, indicating that the veteran politician’s condition was improving.
On August 31, Oburu was reportedly allowed to leave his room briefly to spend several hours outside and soak up some sunshine.
It was said to be the first time doctors had permitted him to do so since his readmission.
The development offered a measure of reassurance to supporters who had become increasingly concerned about his wellbeing.
Oburu reportedly wanted to attend uncle’s funeral
Despite his health challenges, the ODM leader reportedly attempted to leave hospital on Saturday, August 29, to attend the funeral of his uncle, a former intelligence officer, in Alego Usonga, Siaya County.
His doctors, however, reportedly intervened and stopped him from making the journey.
The incident illustrated the extent to which his medical team was monitoring his condition and prioritising his recovery.
Interestingly, another report noted that Oburu had been seen playing golf on August 29, with photographs showing him appearing to be in good spirits before he was reportedly taken to hospital later that day.
Health concerns had emerged before
The latest hospitalisation comes weeks after Oburu stepped down as chairman of the Senate Energy Committee.
On August 11, the Siaya senator announced that he was relinquishing the powerful committee position, insisting that the decision should not be interpreted as a coup or forced removal.
Addressing members of the committee, Oburu said:
“The reasons why I am vacating are beyond my own self-control. I have resigned. Nobody should say that I have been removed.”
He added:
“There is no coup here. There is only a peaceful transfer, and whoever you elect will peacefully take over. I thank everyone once again.”
William Kisang was subsequently elected to replace him as committee chair, while Beatrice Ogolla became vice chairperson.
Oburu’s resignation attracted attention partly because it came after an incident at a parliamentary retreat in Naivasha where he experienced difficulties while delivering a speech and acknowledged eyesight problems.
Questions emerge over ODM leadership
Oburu’s health comes at a particularly crucial time for ODM.
The veteran politician assumed the leadership of the party following the death of his younger brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, in October 2025.
He was subsequently confirmed as ODM party leader in 2026.
His current hospitalisation therefore comes as the party faces the enormous task of consolidating its political base and determining its strategy for the 2027 elections.
The absence of the party’s top leader from the political arena is likely to generate questions about ODM’s next steps, particularly if his medical recovery requires prolonged rest or treatment abroad.
For now, however, there is no official indication that Oburu is stepping aside from his political responsibilities.
Previous overseas treatment
Oburu is no stranger to seeking medical care outside Kenya.
In 2022, the Siaya senator travelled to India where he underwent knee surgery.
At the time, he explained that he had opted for treatment in India, with reports quoting him as expressing concerns about the cost of treatment in Kenyan hospitals.
His reported consideration of specialised treatment in the UK therefore comes against a background of previous overseas medical treatment.
Kenya’s healthcare system has also increasingly grappled with the question of overseas treatment for specialised procedures that may not be readily available locally.
In 2026, the Social Health Authority (SHA) began arrangements allowing eligible Kenyans to access approved specialised treatment abroad under specified conditions.
For Oburu, however, his family has not publicly disclosed what specific treatment, if any, he may receive in the United Kingdom.
Family keeps details private
As concern grows, the Odinga family has largely kept details of Oburu’s condition private.
This has left Kenyans relying on updates from relatives and media reports, while the absence of an official medical statement has created room for speculation.
Other reports also recalled that false claims about Oburu being hospitalised in India circulated online earlier in the year after doctored images were shared on social media.
The claims were subsequently debunked.
The latest reports, however, have been corroborated by multiple Kenyan media outlets.
For now, the clearest update is that Oburu is reportedly stabilising, while his family weighs the possibility of specialised treatment in the United Kingdom.
As the veteran politician recuperates, attention will remain firmly fixed on his health, and on what his absence could mean for ODM’s increasingly consequential political journey towards 2027.
