Pastor James “Jimmy” Irungu collapsed early Thursday morning, January 8, while attempting to complete an 80-hour tree-hugging challenge aimed at raising awareness about cancer in Kenya.
The incident occurred at around 6:29 a.m., barely an hour before the endurance challenge was set to conclude.
Irungu reportedly fainted after spending nearly 79 continuous hours holding onto a tree without rest.
A gospel singer and environmental activist, Irungu began the challenge on Sunday, January 4, in Murang’a County.
He had committed to remaining in uninterrupted physical contact with a single tree for 80 consecutive hours as a symbolic protest against rising cancer cases and environmental degradation.
Following the collapse, Irungu was rushed to Murang’a Level 5 Hospital, where doctors are closely monitoring his condition.
His campaign had drawn large crowds throughout the week, with supporters frequently visiting the site to encourage him.
The challenge was scheduled to officially end at 5:27 a.m. on Thursday, marking both a personal milestone for Irungu and a symbolic victory for his advocacy efforts.
He consistently emphasized that the initiative was not a publicity stunt, but a message linking environmental protection to cancer prevention.
“We cannot ignore the role of chemicals in our food and farm inputs. Protecting our environment is protecting our lives,” Irungu said during an earlier briefing.
Organizers had anticipated health risks associated with prolonged immobility and exposure, and medical personnel were placed on standby throughout the event.
Kenya continues to face a growing cancer crisis, with thousands of new cases reported annually and limited access to screening and treatment facilities, particularly outside major urban centers.
Through his campaign, Irungu urged both the government and private sector to treat cancer as a national emergency by increasing funding for early screening, treatment, public education, and environmental regulation.
Supporters expressed concern following the incident but remained optimistic about his recovery.
“Pastor Jimmy has always been passionate about health and the environment. This was his way of making people listen. We pray he gets well soon,” said Rosemary Ndung’u, a volunteer at the site.
Authorities and health experts are expected to issue statements later in the day addressing both the incident and the broader issues raised by Irungu’s campaign.
Despite its visibility, the challenge sparked debate among health advocates and environmentalists.
Critics questioned the practical impact of the stunt, arguing that cancer patients urgently need affordable treatment and early diagnosis rather than symbolic demonstrations.
Others raised concerns about the physical dangers of prolonged immobility, suggesting the challenge may have put Irungu’s health at risk.
Environmental groups offered mixed reactions, acknowledging the importance of highlighting chemical exposure but urging Irungu to focus on policy advocacy, stricter regulations, and sustainable farming practices rather than high-risk endurance acts.
Supporters, however, insist the campaign achieved its main goal by igniting a national conversation on cancer and environmental health—topics they say are often overlooked in policy discussions.
To qualify for the tree-hugging challenge, participants must maintain continuous physical contact with the same tree throughout the entire duration.
Only brief breaks for hydration or restroom use are permitted, and participants must return immediately.
The event requires constant monitoring by witnesses, video documentation, and timestamped logs, with all evidence meeting verification standards and Guinness World Records guidelines to ensure transparency and credibility.
