Police Constable Lilian Biwott has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for the murder of her husband, Victor Kipchumba, in Eldoret.
In his ruling on Tuesday, Eldoret High Court Judge Justice Reuben Nyakundi described Biwott’s actions as cruel, noting that she shot her spouse 12 times.
The judge emphasized that there was no evidence to suggest that Biwott acted in self-defense or that her husband had provoked her in any way.
Justice Nyakundi further stated that the police officer had misused her firearm, fully aware that her actions were unlawful.
The judge expressed sympathy for the victim’s family, particularly his elderly mother, who has been left deeply distressed by the loss.
“Lilian, you had every opportunity to prevent the death of your husband, the father of your children who are now left orphaned, yet you chose the wrong path,” the judge remarked.
The judge also highlighted the rise in gender-based violence and femicide in the country, underscoring the need for stricter penalties.
He described the manner in which the crime was committed as premeditated and gruesome.
