Police in Garissa have intercepted 88 bags of suspected contraband sugar being transported along the Modika-Modogashe road, following a high-speed chase involving two vehicles.
The operation, carried out by the Border Police Patrol team, took place late at night when the officers, on a routine mobile patrol, spotted two suspicious Toyota Probox vehicles near the Nuno area.
Upon signaling the vehicles to stop for inspection, the drivers attempted to flee, accelerating in a bid to escape.
However, the vehicles were eventually immobilized, and a search revealed the contraband.
The police discovered 88 bags of sugar, each weighing 25kg and branded “SAHA.”
The two vehicles, registered as KDP 613D and KDN 745J, were seized along with the sugar.
Both the goods and the vehicles are currently being held at the Garissa Police Station, awaiting further verification by a multi-agency team.
Authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the origin and destination of the contraband sugar.
In a separate operation in Bungoma County, Kimilili detectives seized hundreds of bottles of second-generation alcohol.
The raid occurred when a motorist was ambushed while attempting to distribute the counterfeit liquor.
Among the items seized were 120 bottles of fake Smart Vodka (250ml), 65 bottles of County Spirits, 20 bottles of Kibao Vodka, and 40 bottles of Chrome.
The counterfeit liquor was confiscated to prevent it from reaching the market, where it could pose a health risk to consumers.
Following the operation, an inventory of the seized items was prepared, and a multi-agency team has taken over the case to investigate the source and distribution networks involved in the counterfeit alcohol trade.
Local authorities have cautioned the public to be vigilant as the festive season approaches, warning against the dangers of consuming alcohol from unlicensed and dubious sources.
The police have urged the public to report any suspicious activities involving counterfeit goods, particularly alcohol and food products, and assured them that all tips would be treated with confidentiality.
They also emphasized the importance of safeguarding public health by staying vigilant against harmful, substandard products during the holiday season.
With the festive period fast approaching, law enforcement agencies are stepping up efforts to curb illegal trade and ensure that both food and beverages consumed during the holidays meet safety standards.
