A woman named Florence Wanjiku, also known as Shiku, was brutally stabbed multiple times by her boyfriend, Elias Njeru, a well-known Nakuru businessman and church leader, who is currently on the run.
Wanjiku is receiving treatment at Optimum Current Care Hospital in Nakuru for her injuries.
According to a police report, the attack occurred in the early hours of Friday, November 22, 2024.
A male resident of Kiamunyi reported the incident after learning that Wanjiku had been attacked.
“At approximately 03:30 hrs on 22/11/2024, I received information that Florence Wanjiku Gichohi had been attacked,” the police report stated.
Wanjiku was rushed to the hospital, where it was confirmed that she had sustained several stab wounds.
Police officers from Menengai Police Station quickly responded to the situation, first visiting the scene and then heading to the hospital where Wanjiku was receiving care.
The investigation revealed that Wanjiku’s boyfriend, Elias Njeru Mutugi, who is also her business partner at their company, Indigenous Land Properties Limited, had visited her at their shared rental home in Olive.
The couple reportedly had a domestic dispute, which escalated into violence, with Njeru stabbing Wanjiku in the head and hands.
“The two had a quarrel, which led to the accused stabbing the victim multiple times in the head and hands,” the police report stated. Wanjiku remains in serious condition at the hospital.
A manhunt has been launched for Njeru, with police working to track him down.
Leaders, including Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, have condemned the incident, calling for the swift apprehension of the perpetrator.
“I condemn the tragic incident in Nakuru, where a man attacked his wife over a domestic dispute.
Violence is never an answer, and gender-based violence has no place in our society,” Governor Waiguru said, adding her prayers for Wanjiku’s recovery.
This attack follows a recent commitment by President William Ruto to combat gender-based violence in Kenya.
On November 20, 2024, he pledged sh100 million to the Safe Home, Safe Space Campaign, aimed at tackling femicide.
The initiative, which will kick off with 16 days of activism on November 25, emphasizes the importance of swift law enforcement action to ensure justice for victims of gender-based violence.
