President William Ruto has officially launched the Petroleum Gas (LPG) Initiative, which aims to move public schools away from biomass-based energy sources and adopt cleaner, safer, and more sustainable cooking alternatives.
The initiative was launched at Jamhuri High School and is designed to accelerate the transition to cleaner energy for both households and institutions.
In his speech, President Ruto highlighted the urgent need to address environmental degradation, deforestation, and pollution caused by the continued use of traditional cooking fuels like firewood.
He stated, “High biomass energy demand significantly hinders afforestation efforts. By reducing biomass use and boosting tree planting, we will improve forest cover and ensure a healthier environment for future generations.”
The LPG Initiative for Public Schools aligns with the government’s broader goal to increase LPG consumption from 6.5 kg to 15 kg per capita by 2028 and raise its penetration to 70%.
The programme will begin with a pilot project in 20 institutions, with plans to expand it to all boarding schools nationwide within the next year.
President Ruto also stressed the economic and health benefits of switching to LPG, noting that cleaner energy would not only enhance the learning environment for students but also create jobs and stimulate the economy by attracting investment in the LPG sector.
He pointed out the government’s collaboration with the private sector to improve LPG imports, reduce costs, and make it more affordable.
“To improve access, we are zero-rating taxes on LPG and enhancing storage infrastructure, particularly for low-income households,” the President explained.
He also outlined the government’s plans to launch a national awareness campaign on LPG safety and its benefits to promote widespread adoption.
Ruto concluded by stating that the switch to LPG in schools would help achieve national goals, such as reducing the cost of living, boosting food security, and fostering economic growth.
“Today’s launch marks the beginning of a transformational journey that will make learning environments safer, cleaner, and better for our children, while also contributing to environmental conservation,” he said.
