The community in Embu has rallied behind Billy Mwangi and his family, showing solidarity after his abduction on December 21.
On Friday, residents took to the streets in protest, carrying placards, setting tyres on fire, and blocking roads, which caused significant disruption to traffic, especially along the Embu-Kiritiri road.
This display of anger and frustration brought businesses to a standstill as locals voiced their discontent over the ongoing abductions in the region.
Since Billy’s abduction, his mother has been emotionally devastated, leading to her hospitalization.
Former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Eric Theuri shared on Thursday that Billy’s mother has been receiving medical care due to the trauma caused by her son’s disappearance.
Theuri conveyed the heartbreaking emotions of Billy’s father, who described the overwhelming sense of frustration and hopelessness in his voice.
“I spoke with Billy’s father, and his voice was filled with despair. He shared that his wife is in the hospital due to the emotional strain.
I assured him that we will pursue a habeas corpus petition to help locate Billy,” Theuri said.
Since Billy’s disappearance, his family has conducted widespread searches throughout Embu County, but they have yet to find any leads.
Billy is among at least seven young people allegedly abducted in recent weeks, many of whom are believed to have been targeted because of their critical social media posts about President William Ruto and his government.
Other missing youths include cartoonist Kibet Bull, his brother Ronny Kiplangat, Benard Kavuli, and Peter Muteti.
The rising number of abductions, particularly after the anti-government protests in June, has sparked strong condemnation from political leaders, religious figures, and civil society groups, who are calling for justice and accountability.
The Judiciary has also spoken out, issuing a statement that denounced the abductions and emphasized the importance of protecting citizens’ rights.
“Abductions have no place in the law and are a direct threat to the rights of citizens. We urge security agencies to respect the law and protect the fundamental rights and freedoms of every Kenyan,” the Judiciary’s statement read.
As the search for Billy and other missing youths continues, calls for justice grow louder, with increasing pressure on authorities to investigate these disturbing disappearances and hold those responsible accountable.
