Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi is set to be dismissed from his position, according to National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wa.
In an interview with Al Jazeera’s Mehdi Hasan, Ichung’wa confirmed that Muturi, who previously served as Attorney General, was removed from that role for specific reasons.
However, Ichung’wa did not elaborate on the exact reasons for his ousting, only stating that Muturi was in poor standing with President William Ruto and his government.
Ichung’wa further stated that Muturi was aware of his imminent departure from the government.
“There are reasons why Justin Muturi was removed as Attorney General, particularly around the time of the demonstrations in June last year. He probably knows he is on his way out,” Ichung’wa said.
When asked about allegations of the government’s involvement in the abduction of Muturi’s son, Ichung’wa responded that these were accusations made by Muturi himself, and the matter was under investigation.
Ichung’wa clarified, “It is him who has made those allegations, and that is a matter under investigation.”
When pressed on whether President Ruto had denied the claims, he added, “You need to invite him and ask him. I am not President Ruto or his spokesperson, and I haven’t heard him speak about it.”
Earlier in January, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua claimed that Muturi had received threatening messages from the president after a speech he gave at a funeral in Embu County was rejected.
Gachagua said, “The President sent threatening messages to Muturi at night, accusing him of having his speech rejected in Embu at a funeral.”
On January 31, Muturi also raised concerns about the state of security in Kenya, particularly the abduction and killing of young people, questioning why the government was prioritizing international issues like the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) war while such serious matters persisted at home.
“Why are we kidnapping young boys and girls, only for them to be found dead later? What kind of a country are we?” he questioned.
