Renowned Kenyan radio presenter Edward Carey Kwach has passed away while receiving treatment for meningitis, his family announced on Tuesday morning, April 29, 2025.
In a statement released by family spokesperson Michael Okwiri, the Kwach family confirmed that Carey died on the night of April 28 after weeks of medical care.
His recent public appeal for blood donations had sparked an outpouring of support from fans and fellow media personalities.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the untimely passing of our beloved son and brother, Carey,” the statement read.
“He touched the lives of many through his voice and presence on the airwaves, becoming a trusted and familiar companion to listeners across the country.”
With a career spanning over two decades, Kwach became a household name in Kenya’s radio landscape, admired for his deep, charismatic voice, signature humor, and passion for music.
He rose to prominence in the early 2000s with shows on Capital FM, before joining Homeboyz Radio and later Spice FM, where he hosted until his passing.
Kwach’s radio programs stood out for their thoughtful curation of soulful music, engaging commentary on pop culture, and witty banter that resonated with listeners of all ages.
Beyond the mic, he was also a mentor to many young broadcasters and a respected figure within Kenya’s media industry.
Tributes have flooded social media, with fans, colleagues, and public figures expressing shock and sorrow at the loss of a radio legend.
“Heartbreaking. A colleague and a friend. Rest in peace Edward Kwach,” wrote sports journalist Carol Radull.
Capital FM’s Chiko Lawi described Kwach as “a good man and a true friend,” while radio veteran Maina Kageni paid glowing tribute, saying, “Edward, I’ve said this oh so often you were the greatest radio personality Kenya has ever produced.”
The family extended their gratitude to Kenyans for their unwavering support during Carey’s illness, particularly those who donated blood and sent messages of encouragement.
