Raphael Tuju Explains Exit from Jubilee, Rules Out 2027 Gubernatorial Bid

Former Jubilee Party Secretary-General Raphael Tuju has clarified his reasons for leaving the party and addressed speculation about his political future ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during an interview on NTV on Monday morning, Tuju said his decision to leave Jubilee was personal, dismissing suggestions that internal conflicts were the cause.

“I have left Jubilee for personal reasons. No hard feelings,” Tuju said. “I stepped down so that I’m free to express my personal opinions without being seen as speaking on behalf of anyone else.”

He emphasized that his departure allows him to speak independently, without being tied to the positions of a political organization.

“Now I can speak for myself. It’s like stepping into a free space, just like I’m doing here,” he added.

Tuju also addressed rumors about a potential run for Siaya governor in the 2027 elections, stating clearly that he has no such plans.

“I’m not considering any political office at the moment. I have private businesses to run, and over 100 families directly depend on me. Any decision I make has to consider the impact on them,” he explained.

He argued that Kenya’s current problems are more structural than political, suggesting that taking a county leadership role would not necessarily enable him to address those broader issues.

“The challenges the country is facing today are structural. Running for governor wouldn’t make much difference if those underlying issues aren’t addressed,” Tuju noted.

He also said that any decision to return to politics in the future would require the involvement and support of his family.

“That would be a personal and family decision. If the need arises, it will have to be a collective decision,” he said.

Tuju officially resigned from the Jubilee Party led by former President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday, August 19. In his resignation letter addressed to the former president, Tuju acknowledged the changing political dynamics in the country and within Jubilee, saying he no longer saw any meaningful role for himself in the party.

Despite stepping down, Tuju expressed gratitude for his political journey alongside Kenyatta and affirmed his loyalty to the former president.
