Renowned Akorino Bishop And Gospel Musician Johana Gaceni Passes Away

Kenya is mourning the loss of Bishop Johana Gaceni, a revered Akorino cleric and gospel musician whose death was confirmed on Tuesday, July 16, 2025.

Bishop Gaceni was best known for his powerful gospel anthem Joshua Akirugama Akihita, a song that became a spiritual mainstay among Kikuyu-speaking Christians for its timeless message of faith, perseverance, and victory.

A man of deep conviction and humility, Gaceni was the founder and longtime leader of the Christian Committed Gospel Church, where he served faithfully for over 20 years.

His ministry had a strong presence across Murang’a, Kirinyaga, and Nakuru counties, impacting thousands through both word and worship.

The announcement of Bishop Gaceni’s passing was first shared by fellow Akorino gospel artist and influencer Karangu Muraya. In a heartfelt tribute posted on social media, Karangu described the bishop as “a humble servant of God who touched lives through music and ministry.”

“Rest in peace, my friend Bishop Johana Gaceni. He’s known by the song ‘Joshua Akirugama Akihita’,” wrote Karangu, prompting an outpouring of condolence messages and personal tributes from Kenyans across the country.

President William Ruto led national leaders in honoring the late bishop, describing him as a spiritual pillar and teacher of the Word.

“His teachings were spiritually nourishing, and he immaculately interpreted Biblical scripture for the congregation,” President Ruto said in an official statement. “May God grant the family and friends strength to bear with the loss of Bishop Johana Gaceni.”

The President closed his message with a verse from the book of Job: “The lowly he sets on high, and those who mourn are lifted to safety.” (Job 5:11)

Bishop Gaceni’s music, particularly Joshua Akirugama Akihita, resonated deeply with Christians facing personal and spiritual battles.

The song became a beacon of hope in homes, churches, and crusades, especially in central Kenya, where his ministry had its strongest roots.

Beyond his musical talent, Gaceni was celebrated for his spiritual leadership, especially within the Akorino faith community.

His teachings emphasized purity, devotion, and community service — values that earned him the respect of both young and old.

Gospel musician and Akorino leader Eveleen Mitei also paid tribute to the late bishop, saying, “Bishop Johana Gaceni’s legacy of spiritual guidance and deep understanding will continue to inspire many.

May his family and congregation find strength and peace in these difficult times.”

Emmaus Funeral Directors joined the chorus of condolences in a message addressed to Karangu Muraya and the Akorino community.

“We join you, Karangu Muraya, in mourning the passing of Bishop Johana Gaceni,” the message read. “A beloved servant of God, his legacy and the message of hope he shared through songs like ‘Joshua Akirugama Akihita’ will live on in our hearts.”

Details of Bishop Gaceni’s funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days.

Meanwhile, messages of love and remembrance continue to flood social media as Kenyans honor a life well-lived in service to God and community.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.
