Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua made a brief appearance in Embu on Saturday evening, November 16, after a bittersweet turn of events at the Episcopal ordination and installation of Rt. Rev. Peter Kimani as Bishop of Embu Diocese.
In an unexpected twist, Gachagua found himself sharing the stage with President William Ruto, his successor Kithure Kindiki, and former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
However, the event highlighted the strained political dynamics surrounding Gachagua.
He was seated in a separate tent away from other top dignitaries, although next to his loyal ally, Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba.
There were no exchanges between Gachagua and President Ruto, clearly indicating lingering tension following Gachagua’s impeachment just a month ago.
Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, who hosted the event, gave the floor to other prominent leaders to address the crowd but notably excluded Gachagua.
His silence during the event seemed to confirm a remark he made weeks ago about his region’s tendency to “stay quiet and peaceful” when wronged.
Despite the chilly reception from political leaders, Gachagua received a warm and enthusiastic response from the local crowd.
Through his social media accounts, he expressed his gratitude, sharing a video of the loud applause he received.
“Thank you so much to the people of Embu for the love and warm reception.
I love you too,” Gachagua posted.
President Ruto, meanwhile, did not acknowledge Gachagua’s presence in his speech, instead focusing on issues raised by church leaders earlier in the week, including the controversial Social Health Authority.
He assured the bishops that any mistakes in the Universal Health Coverage plan would be corrected. However, his speech was met with jeers from the Embu crowd, especially when addressing sensitive issues.
The tense atmosphere underscored the ongoing political divisions and public dissatisfaction surrounding the government’s handling of key issues.
