Robbery Suspect Arrested in Embakasi Over Alleged Bank Withdrawal Attacks

Detectives have arrested a suspected member of a robbery gang accused of targeting people shortly after they withdraw money from banks in a series of incidents across the country.

The suspect, identified as Muia Mutune, alias Fredrick Mbuta, was arrested in Embakasi Village following an intelligence-led operation conducted by detectives from the Operation Action Team (OAT) and the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB).

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the gang allegedly uses a deceptive tactic in which members pose as traffic police officers to ambush unsuspecting victims after they leave banking halls.

“The suspects’ modus operandi is to pose as traffic officers, using the authority of the uniform to waylay victims moments after they withdraw cash from banks,” the DCI said.

The agency noted that the suspects allegedly exploit the trust members of the public place in law enforcement officers to carry out the robberies.

“For unsuspecting victims, what should have been an ordinary journey after a bank visit could turn into a frightening encounter with criminals hiding behind the badge,” the DCI stated.

Detectives reportedly relied on intelligence gathering and forensic analysis to identify four key suspects believed to be connected to the robbery incidents.

Among those identified was Mutune, who had previously been arrested in April 2026 over similar cases before being released on bond in July of the same year.

Investigators continued pursuing leads until intelligence placed the suspect in Embakasi Village, where he was subsequently apprehended.

The suspect is being held in custody as detectives complete investigations and prepare him for arraignment in court.

Meanwhile, the DCI said efforts to track down the suspect’s alleged accomplices were ongoing, with the other suspects still at large.

The agency reiterated its commitment to combating violent crime and protecting members of the public, urging continued vigilance as investigations into the robbery network continue.

The suspect remains subject to the legal process, and the allegations against him will be determined by the court.
