He made his official debut in “Parampara” film in 1993. That same year, his performance in “Aashiq Awara” earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut.

The following year, the films “Yeh Dillagi” and “Main Khiladi Tu Anari”, won him his first Filmfare nomination for Best Supporting Actor. 

In 1999, he starred in “Kachche Dhaage” and “Hum Saath-Saath Hain”. The latter became the highest-grossing film of the year and the former earned him a Filmfare Supporting Actor nomination. The follwing year, he appeared in  “Kya Kehna” which earned him praise.

The turning point in his career came with “Dil Chahta Hai” in 2001. The film won him the National Film Award for Best Hindi Film, the Filmfare Award for Best Comic Performance and multiple supporting actor awards.

He achieved further success and popularity with “Kal Ho Naa Ho” in 2003, which became the year’s biggest hit, earning him the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor.

In 2004, he starred in “Ek Hasina Thi” and “Hum Tum”. The latter earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor, the Filmfare Award for Best Comic Performance, and his first Best Actor nomination.

2012 to 2025

In 2012, he produced and starred in “Agent Vinod” and  followed it with the romantic hit “Cocktail”, one of the biggest earners of that year. The following year, he appeared in “Race 2” which was also a commercial success.

He earned praise for his performance in “Chef” in 2017. Most notably, he made his digital debut in Netflix’s “Sacred Games” on Netflix in 2018 and earned international praise.

His performance in “Tanhaji” in 2020 was acknowledged as one of his best, earning him his second Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. The film also became his highest-grossing Hindi release, with worldwide earnings exceeding ₹3.6 billion.

That same year, he produced the film “Jawaani Jaaneman” which received positive reviews. Afterwards, he appeared in “Tandav”, “Bhoot Police” and “Vikram Vedha”. 

Surprisingly, “Devara: Part 1” film released in 2024, became the highest-grossing movie of his career, surpassing ₹5 billion globally.

His latest role was in Netflix’s “Jewel Thief – The Heist Begins” film in 2025.
