Seven foreigners, including four Australians and one American, have been hospitalized after drinking cocktails at a luxury hotel resort in Fiji, health officials confirmed on Sunday.
The guests, aged between 18 and 56, began experiencing severe symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, and neurological issues, after consuming drinks at a bar in the Warwick Fiji resort, located on the Coral Coast, around 60 kilometers (40 miles) west of the capital Suva.
Fiji’s health ministry reported that all seven individuals were initially taken to Sigatoka Hospital on Saturday night, but due to the severity of their conditions, they were later transferred to Lautoka Hospital on the island’s west coast.
The group consisted of four Australians, one American, and two foreign nationals living in Fiji, though their identities were not disclosed.
Health authorities have not yet identified the cause of the illness but issued a warning for tourists to ensure their food and drinks are safe during the holiday period.
Australia’s foreign ministry confirmed it was providing consular assistance to two of the families involved, but declined to provide further details due to privacy obligations.
Australian public broadcaster ABC reported that a 56-year-old Australian woman was under constant surveillance at the hospital, while a 19-year-old Australian was suffering serious medical episodes.
Two other Australian women, aged 49 and 18, were in critical but less severe condition.
Fiji police are currently investigating the incident.
This incident follows a similar tragedy in Laos last month, where several foreigners, including two Australians, died of suspected methanol poisoning after a night out in the town of Vang Vieng.
