A school bus carrying children has been involved in a road accident near Kikima Market in Mbooni Sub County, Makueni.
The incident occurred on Saturday, November 23, and was confirmed by Kenya Red Cross, who reported that the children were trapped after the bus overturned.
“Children trapped in the overturned bus are being rescued by response teams led by the county government,” the statement from the Kenya Red Cross read in part.
Earlier in the day, at least 10 primary school pupils were injured in a separate accident on the Southern Bypass near the Ole Sereni Hotel off Mombasa Road, Nairobi.
Witnesses said the County Link passenger bus they were traveling in lost control, overturned, and rolled.
Preliminary reports suggest the bus was either transporting the students to school or returning from a special trip at the time of the crash.
At the scene, shoes, gumboots, and sandals were scattered on the ground, while onlookers gathered around the wreckage.
Rescue teams were seen working to evacuate those trapped inside the bus.
Emergency responders quickly arrived to assist the injured children and transport them to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Police are on the ground coordinating the rescue operation, and investigations into the cause of the accident are underway.
At the time of publishing, no fatalities had been reported.
This accident follows a deadly incident the previous day, where five people lost their lives and several others sustained serious injuries.
The tragedy occurred when a lorry transporting maize lost control and collided with two vehicles at Kibirigwi town along the Karatina-Sagana-Nairobi highway.
Kirinyaga West Subcounty Police Commander Moses Koskei stated that the lorry’s brakes reportedly malfunctioned while descending from Karatina, causing it to crash into two private cars heading towards the town.
Eyewitnesses said the lorry was unable to control its speed as it descended the sharp Kangoco Hill.
Just a week earlier, on November 13, ten people were killed, and twenty others injured in a tragic road accident at Iguhu Bridge.
A tanker traveling from Kisumu to Kakamega reportedly hit a bump, causing the driver to lose control and veer into the oncoming lane, where it collided with two Public Service Vehicles (PSVs).
Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa later confirmed that the death toll from the Yala Bridge accident had risen to 13, with three more fatalities reported at Kakamega County General Hospital.
