A quiet Sunday evening in Nairobi ‘s Parklands estate turned into a scene of devastation after a 16-year-old driver allegedly lost control of a vehicle, killing two pedestrians and leaving a 10-year-old boy fighting for his life.
The tragic crash, which occurred at around 6:00 p.m., has sparked fresh debate over underage driving and the growing number of unlicensed motorists on Kenyan roads.
According to police, the teenager was driving a Toyota Wish from the Deep Sea area towards Limuru Road when he reportedly lost control of the vehicle.
The car first rammed into a drainage ditch before becoming airborne, veering off the road and ploughing into three pedestrians who were walking along the roadside.
One of the victims, identified as 48-year-old Muchuki Mangaa, died instantly at the scene due to the impact.
Another adult male, who had been rushed to hospital with critical injuries, later succumbed while receiving treatment.
Police are yet to formally identify the second victim.
The third victim, a 10-year-old boy, sustained serious head injuries and was rushed to Aga Khan University Hospital, where he remains admitted in critical condition.
The teenage driver also suffered head injuries and a cut to the abdomen. He was taken to the same hospital for treatment.
Nairobi Police Commander Issa Mohamud confirmed that detectives have launched investigations to establish what caused the crash and, more importantly, how a 16-year-old ended up behind the wheel of the vehicle.
“We are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident, including how the minor gained access to the vehicle,” police said as investigations got underway.
The bodies of the deceased were moved to the City Mortuary awaiting post-mortem examinations and identification by relatives.
Renewed concerns over underage driving
The accident has reignited public concern about underage driving in Kenya, where only individuals aged 18 years and above are legally eligible to obtain a driving licence after completing the required training and testing.
Road safety experts have repeatedly warned that allowing minors to drive exposes not only the young drivers themselves but also innocent road users to unnecessary danger.
Parents and guardians who permit underage children to operate vehicles may also face legal consequences if negligence is established.
Kenya has continued to record thousands of road crashes annually, with speeding, reckless driving, distracted driving, driving under the influence and failure to observe traffic regulations remaining among the leading causes of fatal accidents.
Government agencies have intensified road safety campaigns, but fatal crashes continue to claim lives across the country.
As investigators reconstruct Sunday’s events, grieving families are mourning the loss of loved ones while hoping the ongoing probe will reveal exactly what happened and whether any criminal liability will arise.
The incident has also sparked calls for stricter enforcement against underage driving and greater responsibility by vehicle owners to ensure minors are never allowed behind the wheel.
