Sifuna Celebrates as Registrar Approves Linda Mwananchi Movement Name Reservation

Sifuna Celebrates as Registrar Approves Linda Mwananchi Movement Name Reservation

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has celebrated a major development in his bid to establish the Linda Mwananchi Movement as a political vehicle ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The development came after the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) approved the reservation of the name Linda Mwananchi Movement (LMM) for a period of up to 90 days.

Sifuna appeared to celebrate the development on Facebook, where he shared the official letter from the Registrar of Political Parties with the brief caption:

“Wametii”

The post came shortly after the Registrar communicated the approval to the legal representatives of the applicants.

Registrar gives Linda Mwananchi green light

The letter dated October 1, 2026, and addressed to Bansbury Associates Advocates LLP, acknowledges receipt of the application under Section 4B of the Political Parties Act.

According to the document, the application to reserve the name Linda Mwananchi Movement (LMM) was approved following the judgment of the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal in the case involving Michael Caroli Omondi and another against the Registrar of Political Parties.

The Registrar stated that the reservation of the name would run for not more than 90 days from the date of the letter.

The approval followed a legal battle over the proposed political identity.

The Political Parties Disputes Tribunal had on September 30 set aside the Registrar’s earlier decision declining the reservation application and directed the office to reconsider the matter.

The tribunal’s decision removed a significant legal obstacle that had been facing Sifuna and his allies as they sought to formalise the movement ahead of the 2027 polls.

Sifuna shares letter with one-word celebration

Rather than issuing a lengthy statement, Sifuna shared the Registrar’s letter on his Facebook page and accompanied it with the short caption “Wametii.”

The caption appeared to be a celebratory response to the latest development after weeks of uncertainty surrounding the movement’s preferred name.

The letter shared by the Nairobi senator clearly states that the reservation application had been approved and that the name would be reserved for a maximum period of 90 days.

The development gives the movement room to proceed with the next stages of establishing itself within Kenya’s political framework.

The battle over Linda Mwananchi name

The name has been at the centre of a legal and political dispute involving different groups claiming an interest in the Linda Mwananchi identity.

The Political Parties Disputes Tribunal previously found that the Registrar had not sufficiently justified the decision to reject the reservation application.

The dispute also involved the Liberty National Democratic Alliance (LINDA), with the similarity between the names forming part of the disagreement.

The tribunal ultimately found differences between the proposed names and directed the Registrar to reconsider the application.

There have also been reports of another application for the Linda Mwananchi name.

Several Kenyan Media outlets earlier reported that Charles Wanyonyi claimed to have submitted an application earlier in February 2026 and that his lawyers had asked the Registrar to give priority to his application.

The competing claims have added another layer to the political battle surrounding the name.

Sifuna’s political ambitions

The development comes at a significant moment for Sifuna, who has increasingly positioned himself at the centre of the Linda Mwananchi political movement.

On September 27, reports indicated that Linda Mwananchi leaders had settled on Sifuna as the movement’s leader and presidential candidate, with the group also expressing its intention to work with like-minded political parties.

The movement has also featured several prominent opposition politicians, including Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale and Siaya Governor James Orengo.

The development has nevertheless come amid discussions over the political vehicle that the movement should use in the 2027 election.

Reports have previously highlighted differences among some of the leaders over whether Linda Mwananchi should operate through an existing political party or establish a new political identity.

Reservation is not yet full party registration

Despite the excitement surrounding the Registrar’s letter, the approval should not be confused with the movement already being a fully registered political party.

The reservation gives the applicants a protected period for the name while they proceed with the relevant registration and compliance requirements.

The Registrar has previously emphasised that only fully registered and compliant political parties can participate in elections.

This means Sifuna and his allies still have several procedural steps to complete if they intend to use the political vehicle in the August 10, 2027 General Election.

Political parties are also facing a number of electoral and registration deadlines as the country moves closer to the 2027 polls.

A fresh chapter for Linda Mwananchi

The approval nevertheless represents an important development for Sifuna’s political project.

For weeks, the future of the Linda Mwananchi name had remained uncertain as legal proceedings played out between the movement’s supporters and the Registrar.

With the October 1 letter now confirming the reservation, the movement has gained a clearer route toward establishing its political identity.

For Sifuna, the Facebook post carrying the simple message “Wametii” marked his public celebration of a legal and administrative breakthrough that could shape the next phase of his political journey.

The bigger question now is whether Linda Mwananchi can complete the remaining registration requirements and translate the movement’s growing political visibility into a fully compliant political organisation ahead of the 2027 elections.
