Son suspected of killing 79-year-old father burnt to death by mob in Murang’a

A 52-year-old man suspected of killing his 79-year-old father was lynched and his body burnt beyond recognition by an irate mob in Kangema, Murang’a County.

The incident occurred on Sunday, August 30, 2026, at Kiangunyi Village, where the body of the elderly man, identified as Peter Mucheke Mwangi, was discovered lying on the ground.

A resident was passing near the deceased’s home at about 6:47pm when he noticed him lying on the ground with blood oozing from his mouth and nose.

He moved closer and found the elderly man unresponsive, with visible injuries to his face and chest believed to have been inflicted using a sharp object.

The resident alerted neighbours, who confirmed that the man was dead.

Police identified the deceased’s son, Simon Thuo Mwangi, 52, as the main suspect in the killing.

However, before he could be taken into police custody, angry members of the public descended on him and subjected him to mob justice, killing him and subsequently setting his body on fire.

The motive behind the suspected killing of the elderly man had not been established by the time of the report.

The bodies of the father and his suspected killer were removed to Murang’a Mortuary, where they were awaiting postmortem examinations.

And police in Homa Bay County have launched investigations into the murder of a 40-year-old man whose body was found with visible head injuries beside a murram road in Rachuonyo South.

The body of Phillip Odwar, a Luo male adult, was discovered at Bonde Village in Obisa Sub-location on Friday, August 28, 2026.

Police visited the scene and found Odwar’s lifeless body lying a few metres from his home.

The deceased had visible injuries on his head, raising suspicion that he had been assaulted before his death.

He was last seen alive on Thursday at about 7pm when he told her he was going to Oyugis town to get her some food.

He did not return home.

The scene was processed and documented by the investigating officers, while the body was moved to Rachuonyo Sub-County Hospital Mortuary pending a postmortem examination.

Police have launched investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding his death and identify those responsible.
