In a call for immediate action, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has urged key justice and security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the recent spate of abductions and subsequent deaths of citizens.
Wetang’ula’s statement comes after a series of disturbing reports about people being abducted, only to later be found dead under unclear circumstances.
“I want to take this opportunity to urge the agencies responsible for the administration of justice the Office of the Inspector General (IG), the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), and internal security organs to investigate thoroughly and uncover the root cause of these abductions.
People are being taken, and then their bodies are later found dead.
We need to know who is behind these criminal activities,” Wetang’ula said in a public address.
The Speaker expressed grave concern that, despite police statements denying their involvement, the continued abductions and deaths indicate a serious threat to citizens’ safety and security.
“We want the police to investigate and provide answers to Kenyans about who these criminal elements are, unlawfully arresting and causing the disappearance of people,” Wetang’ula added.
The Speaker referred to a painful chapter in the country’s history when bodies were discovered in various locations such as the Yala River, raising serious human rights violations concerns.
He emphasized that the current government, under the Kenya Kwanza administration, remains committed to ensuring respect for human rights.
“We shudder at the possibility of returning to the days when bodies were found in places like the Yala River and other locations.
The Kenya Kwanza government promised and is committed to respecting human rights. We cannot afford to let this situation return,” Wetang’ula continued.
“The IG, DCI, and DPP must take immediate action and carry out a thorough investigation to stop this wave of abductions and deaths from tarnishing the country’s reputation.”
The Speaker further emphasized that these abductions must not be allowed to continue unchecked.
“These actions are undermining the rule of law and are a threat to the security of all Kenyans. We expect swift action from our law enforcement agencies,” he stressed.
In recent months, several families have reported their loved ones missing, with many later discovering that their relatives were found dead under mysterious circumstances.
Wetang’ula’s statement resonates with a growing concern among Kenyans that something must be done to end the fear and uncertainty surrounding these disappearances.
The call for action was directed not only at the law enforcement agencies but also at the public to share any information that might help in resolving these cases.
He urged the government to act swiftly to protect the dignity and safety of all citizens and restore confidence in the country’s justice system.
The ongoing national conversation on abductions and extrajudicial killings has placed pressure on authorities to ensure the protection of human rights and to investigate these troubling incidents to their full extent.
The public continues to demand transparency and accountability in the investigations, with hopes that the authorities will work swiftly to bring those responsible to justice.
