Suspect arrested over vehicle arson during Githurai demonstrations

Detectives have arrested a suspect believed to have been involved in the torching of a motor vehicle during the recent fuel-related demonstrations at Githurai Roundabout.

The suspect, identified as Elisha Karanja Gatwa, was apprehended in Ruiru following investigations by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

According to the DCI, the arrest was made after detectives pursued crucial leads linked to the incident, which occurred during violent protests that resulted in the destruction of property.

“Detectives have arrested a suspect believed to have been involved in the arson attack on a motor vehicle at Githurai Roundabout during the recent violent fuel-related demonstrations,” the DCI said in a statement.

Investigators said Gatwa is currently undergoing processing as detectives continue with efforts to identify and apprehend other individuals suspected of participating in the incident.

“The suspect was arrested in Ruiru after investigators followed critical leads arising from the case. Investigations remain ongoing as we pursue other persons of interest linked to the criminal act,” the agency stated.

Authorities have reiterated that acts of violence, arson, and destruction of property during demonstrations remain criminal offences punishable by law.

“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations reiterates that violence, arson, and destruction of property are serious criminal offences. Those found culpable will be pursued and subjected to the full force of the law,” the statement added.

The arrest comes as security agencies intensify investigations into incidents of vandalism and property destruction reported during recent protests in several parts of the country.

Police have urged members of the public to exercise their constitutional right to peaceful assembly responsibly and refrain from engaging in acts that endanger lives or damage property.

The suspect is expected to be arraigned in court once investigations are completed and appropriate charges are preferred against him.
