Police and officials from the Independent Policing Oversight Authority in Nakuru County launched investigations following the death of a 40-year-old man while in custody at Keringet Police Station in Kuresoi South Sub-County.
According to police, the deceased, identified as Benard Cheruiyot, had been booked on March 26, 2026, at Kiptangich Police Station on allegations of threatening to kill.
The incident was first reported by fellow inmates at around 11:30 a.m., who alerted officers that Cheruiyot was unwell.
Report office personnel, together with the Deputy Officer Commanding Station (OCS), responded and found him in a distressed state, during which he reportedly injured himself by hitting his head against the cell wall.
A clinical officer from Keringet Sub-County Hospital was called to the station and administered first aid, after which the inmate temporarily calmed down.
However, at around 8:00 a.m., his condition deteriorated, prompting officers to rush him to Keringet Sub-County Hospital for further treatment. He was later pronounced dead at approximately 10:00 a.m.
The body has been preserved pending a post-mortem examination as authorities begin investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death.
