One suspect implicated in the murder of Willis Ayieko, a former Human Resource Director at Wells Fargo Security Company, has died.
The individual, who was transported to a hospital in Yala, Siaya County, succumbed to injuries sustained during a police shooting in Wangai, Gem.
According to law enforcement, she was one of two female suspects apprehended on Wednesday morning.
Authorities in Siaya, specifically in the Gem Wagai sub-county, recovered a pistol that belonged to Ayieko.
This weapon had been stolen from him on the night of his murder.
The recovery occurred following a tip from the public, who reported seeing two individuals—one male and one female—armed with a gun in a Toyota Axio at Wagai Trading Centre.
In response, officers from Wagai Police Station attempted to stop the suspect’s vehicle; however, the male driver ignored their commands and opened fire on the police while fleeing towards Luanda, as reported by the police.
This led to a pursuit that concluded at Adder Farm in the Kagilo area, where the vehicle lost control and overturned on its left side.
The driver managed to escape, leaving the injured and unconscious female passenger behind.
Upon inspecting the vehicle, police discovered a pistol loaded with 11 rounds of ammunition, which was confirmed to be the firearm stolen from Ayieko.
The woman was transported to a hospital in Yala; however, she tragically succumbed to her injuries a few hours later, according to police reports.
An intensified search for the fleeing suspect led detectives from Gem Yala to his rented residence at Sagam Trading Centre in Kanyibwop village.
There, they recovered various items, including a jungle green sweater, military-style shorts, two pairs of desert storm jungle boots, two television sets (40″ and 32″), an HP laptop, and a Rolex watch, among other belongings.
Detectives are currently pursuing at least six individuals in connection with the murder of Ayieko.
To date, three suspects have been apprehended, one of whom has been identified as being present at the scene of the crime. Among those arrested, a woman died in the hospital following a gunfight.
Mohamed Amin, the Director of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, stated that they are focusing on a gang consisting of six to seven individuals.
He noted that the motive for the murder remains unclear, indicating that those arrested thus far may not have been directly involved in Ayieko’s death.
However, they are believed to have indirect connections to the crime, and police are currently interrogating them for further insights.
“We have not yet determined the motive behind the killing, but we are making significant progress. Our focus is on a gang of six to seven individuals, and we are narrowing down our search,” he remarked.
Amin further mentioned that detectives are actively seeking additional known suspects related to the abduction, violent robbery, and murder of Ayieko.
He confirmed that investigators recovered a Ceska pistol, which had been stolen from Ayieko during the attack and murder in Gem, Siaya County.
This recovery occurred during a shootout in the Luanda area on Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.
Among the three individuals in custody is Victor Okoth Ouma, who was arrested in the Dandora estate of Nairobi and subsequently presented at the Siaya Law Courts on Wednesday.
Investigators have been granted a 21-day detention period for Ouma as part of their ongoing investigation.
Police reports indicate that forensic analysis placed him at the crime scene, and he is also alleged to have conducted transactions using Ayieko’s mobile phone, including withdrawing funds from his account.
