After touring in Grease in 1995, Sutton Foster transitioned to the Broadway production in 1996. Afterwards, she joined the ensemble of The Scarlet Pimpernel in 1997 and, following its closure, appeared as Star to Be in the revival of Annie.

In 1998, she performed in What the World Needs Now at the Old Globe Theatre before touring  in Les Misérables, later understudying the same role on Broadway in 2000.
