Teenager drowns while swimming in Kwale dam


A 17-year-old boy drowned while swimming in a dam in Kinango Sub-County, Kwale County.

 

Police identified the deceased as Daniel Sopoon, who had been grazing cattle with a 23-year-old companion before the two decided to swim in Lukakani Dam on the afternoon of July 5.

According to police, Sopoon ventured into deep water and drowned.

Police officers visited the scene, while volunteers recovered the body from the dam.

Police said the body had no visible physical injuries. The scene was processed before the body was moved to Voi Referral Hospital Mortuary for preservation pending a post-mortem examination.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.

And the body of a 70-year-old boat operator was recovered from the River Tana in Mbeere South Sub-County, Embu County, two days after his boat capsized.

Police identified the deceased as Bonface Mureithi Nduma, who reportedly operated a boat near Gitaru Dam.

According to investigators, the incident occurred on July 3 when Nduma had been hired by a businesswoman to transport pawpaw fruits across the river. As they were returning, the boat is said to have struck a rock and capsized.

The businesswoman was rescued by fishermen, but Nduma disappeared beneath the water. A search operation was launched immediately but did not locate him until the evening of July 5, when his body was spotted and retrieved.

The body was moved to Kings Funeral Home in Kiritiri, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination. Police are continuing with investigations into the incident.

Elsewhere, police in Makueni County are investigating the death of a 77-year-old man whose body was found floating in a dam in Nzaui Sub-County.

According to police, the body of Kenneth Kamuya Musyimi was discovered on the afternoon of July 5 at a dam in Ndotuni Village, Mutyambua Location.

Police visited the scene and, with the help of members of the public, retrieved the body from the water.

Police said the body had no visible physical injuries. The deceased was identified as a resident of Matooni Village in Mutiswa Location within the same sub-county.

The body was taken to Kilome Mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death as investigations continue.
