Tension in Embakasi as riders burn 33-seater minibus after alleged hit-and-run

A group of boda boda riders on Friday evening torched a 33-seater minibus after it allegedly knocked down one of their colleagues near Mama Lucy Hospital in Embakasi Central, Nairobi.

The incident occurred along Kangundo Road when the minibus reportedly swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle, resulting in the collision.

The crash quickly drew the attention of nearby residents and boda boda operators, who confronted the minibus driver before the situation escalated.

According to eyewitness footage, the mob set the vehicle ablaze, leaving it fully engulfed in flames as onlookers kept their distance.

The blaze caused major disruption along the busy route, which connects Embakasi, Umoja and Donholm to Kangundo Road.

No injuries were reported from the fire, but the minibus was completely destroyed, reduced to a charred metallic shell. Police officers arrived at the scene hours later to assess the situation and cordoned off the area, restricting access to motorists and residents.

The incident has reignited public concern over the rising trend of boda boda riders resorting to burning vehicles involved in accidents, a form of mob justice that has resulted in heavy losses for transport operators and private motorists. Insurance compensation in such cases often remains uncertain.
