Three people were killed in a shooting in the central area of Uppsala, Sweden, on Tuesday, prompting a homicide investigation, authorities confirmed.
Police have not yet identified the victims and say the motive behind the attack remains unknown.
A police spokesperson told media that witnesses saw a person fleeing the scene on an electric scooter, though it remains unclear whether this individual was involved or simply a bystander.
Electric scooters have previously been used in gang-related shootings in Sweden as a quick mode of escape.
The incident occurred during Walpurgis Night celebrations, a major spring festival in Sweden, adding to the shock of the event.
Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer described the shooting as “extremely serious” and said the ministry was in close contact with police.
Witnesses reported hearing up to five shots and saw people fleeing for safety. Local media said the shooting happened near or inside a hair salon.
Sweden continues to grapple with gang-related violence, with gun crime on the rise in recent years.
