A tragic road accident in Mlolongo, Machakos County, has claimed the lives of two people.
A bodaboda rider and his female passenger died instantly when their motorcycle was struck by a truck along the Old Mombasa Road at around 6:00 am on Monday.
Athi River East Subcounty Police Commander Anderson Mbae confirmed the incident, which was reported to the Mlolongo Police Station as a fatal road accident shortly after it occurred.
According to local reports, the accident took place near the Oilcom area, close to the yellow flyover.
The bodaboda rider was transporting the woman from Mlolongo Market when the collision occurred.
Eyewitnesses said the truck driver fled the scene immediately after the crash.
The truck, which was empty at the time, was en route to nearby quarries to collect construction materials.
In response to the tragedy, angry members of the public staged a protest, blaming the truck driver for the incident.
They blocked the road with tires and stones and set the truck on fire.
Police officers from the Mlolongo Police Station arrived promptly, dispersing the demonstrators and clearing the area.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to the mortuary, while the wreckage of both the truck and the motorcycle were towed to the Mlolongo police station.
The accident caused a significant traffic jam, with motorists seeking alternative routes. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
