Motorists have been urged to avoid the Embu-Meru highway following a fatal crash involving a Tahmeed bus traveling on the Isiolo-Mombasa route and two trucks.
The tragic accident, which took place near the Sewage area in Embu Town on Wednesday night, January 15, has claimed the lives of two individuals and left many others injured.
Reports indicate that the victims include one truck driver and his turnboy, who died instantly.
The trucks involved were transporting timber and maize, while the Tahmeed passenger bus was en route to Mombasa.
According to witnesses, the accident occurred when one of the trucks, heading towards Nairobi, experienced brake failure and collided with the second truck.
The second truck had been stationary and was being inspected by county enforcement officers at a roadblock.
The collision caused significant damage, with the bus sustaining a broken windscreen from the force of the impact.
The accident led to a major traffic jam along the highway, as emergency response teams scrambled to the scene for rescue efforts.
Rescue operations were complicated when the trucks spilled their loads of timber and maize, blocking access to the victims.
Emergency teams from Kirimari Ward worked tirelessly to assist, but the wreckage made it difficult to reach the trapped individuals.
Police were also on site, using a breakdown truck to clear the debris and free the truck drivers, who had been trapped inside their cabins.
While none of the bus passengers lost their lives, several sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
The wreckage has been towed to Embu Police Station for further investigation as authorities work to piece together the details of the accident.
Local witnesses have expressed concern that this stretch of the highway has become a notorious accident black spot, with multiple incidents occurring in the area over time.
There are calls for improved safety measures to prevent further tragedies on this dangerous section of the road.
