Two suspected gang members were fatally shot on Tuesday night during an attempted robbery in Yala town, Siaya County.
A Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officer was also injured during the confrontation.
According to police reports, the incident occurred at around 10:00 p.m. when the suspects, both middle-aged men, stormed a shop and attempted to rob a female shopkeeper.
The shopkeeper raised the alarm, drawing the attention of a DCI officer on patrol from Yala Police Station, who responded promptly.
Gem Yala Sub-County Police Commander, Charles Wafula, said the suspects attempted to flee the scene and attacked the officer with a metal rod, hitting him in the chest.
In self-defence, the officer opened fire, killing both suspects on the spot.
The injured officer was admitted to Yala Sub-County Hospital, while the bodies of the two suspects were taken to the hospital mortuary.
“The deceased were part of a criminal gang we’ve been pursuing in connection with a series of robberies in the area,” said Mr. Wafula.
One of the suspects has been identified as Charles Odhiambo Ojwang’, alias ‘Buda’. The identity of the second suspect is yet to be confirmed.
