U.S. Ambassador to Kenya, Meg Whitman has responded to growing criticism from some Kenyans who have called her recall, particularly following Donald Trump’s election victory.
Critics have expressed dissatisfaction with Whitman’s silence on critical issues such as corruption, extrajudicial killings, and human rights abuses, especially after the June 2024 Gen z movement protests, during which police were accused of killing dozens of demonstrators and arresting many others.
Whitman’s diplomatic approach has primarily focused on economic issues, positioning Kenya as a favorable destination for American business under her “Why Africa, WHY KENYA” initiative.
However, this emphasis on trade and investment has been criticized for overshadowing human rights concerns leaving issues like the government on these matters has failed to hold president Whitman Ruto’s administration accountable.
The criticism intensified after Donald Trump’s victory, with some social media users calling for her immediate recall.
One user on X (formerly Twitter) stated, “Let her go back home now that Biden is out,” while another suggested,” Meg Whitman should park and leave Kenya.”
Breaking her silence on Thursday, Whitman responded, “Like all U.S. ambassadors I serve at the president’s request.”
She also defended her role during president Ruto’s recent visit to the U.S. where she facilitated the agenda, underscoring her access and influence a race characteristic for U.S. ambassadors.
Breaking her on Thursday, Whitman reiterated her commitment to U.S -Kenya relations focusing on prosperity, security and mutual respect for democratic value.
She emphasized that the U.S. and Kenya’s long- standing relationship, which has matured over 60 years, remaining strong.
Whitman’s tenure, which began august 2022, has seen both praise and criticism, with political leaders like Raila Odinga accusing her of overstepping diplomatic boundaries, particularly regarding the 2022 elections.
Nonetheless, Whitman has maintained that she continues to serve her duties as directed by the U.S. president regardless of the political climate.
