U.S. To Revoke Visas Of Chinese Students In Major Immigration Shift

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Wednesday that the United States will begin “aggressively” revoking student visas for Chinese nationals, particularly those with ties to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) or studying in sensitive academic and technological fields.

The move is expected to significantly impact American universities and U.S.-China relations.

“The U.S. State Department will work with the Department of Homeland Security to aggressively revoke visas for Chinese students,” Rubio said.

He also revealed plans to tighten visa scrutiny for applicants from both China and Hong Kong.

Though the exact criteria for revocation have not been released, experts warn that even limited action could disrupt a vital revenue stream for U.S. universities and further sour relations with Beijing.

In Beijing, China’s Foreign Ministry condemned the decision and lodged formal protests, promising to safeguard the rights of Chinese students abroad. Many affected students expressed shock and fear over the announcement.

“Broad revocations and blanket bans… risk undermining America’s position as a global innovation leader,” said U.S.-based human rights researcher Yaqiu Wang.

The crackdown continues President Trump’s intensified immigration agenda in his second term.

Last week, Harvard University’s ability to enroll foreign students was temporarily revoked over alleged ties to China, though a judge has since blocked the decision.

International students contributed over $50 billion to the U.S. economy in 2023, with Chinese students representing a significant portion.

Their numbers have already declined from a peak of 370,000 in 2019 to 277,000 in 2024.

Universities, legal experts, and student organizations are preparing responses, as concerns mount over the broader consequences of the policy.

Legal challenges are expected, and calls for narrowing the scope of enforcement are growing.
