Residents of Trans Mara in Narok County are left reeling from significant losses after a group of unknown assailants raided and destroyed a vast 15,000-acre maize farm.
The attack occurred on New Year’s Eve, leaving the local community devastated as they now face the aftermath of the destruction.
The raid, which is believed to have begun on December 29 and continued through December 31, saw large portions of maize plantations across the expansive land being cut down.
Locals are now grappling with the damage, with some recalling a similar incident from the previous year.
“This is not the first time; last year, maize plantations were slashed on this same land and the neighboring ones.
We are wondering what the issue is,” said Charles Korir, a concerned resident.
The ongoing land dispute, centered on the 15,000-acre property at the Narok-Migori border, has fueled tensions in the area.
Residents are now urging the government to intervene and help resolve the long-standing conflict.
“Over the past three years, we have lost over 1,027 cows due to these disputes, some of which were shot on the road.
Now our plantations are paying the expensive price,” added Jaona Kamilal, another local resident, lamenting the continuing violence in the area.
Trans Mara South Police Commander Bashir Ali confirmed the incident and assured residents that the matter is under investigation.
He emphasized, however, that the attack was not politically motivated.
“This is a normal issue involving criminal elements or disputes over land ownership.
There is no political undertone to this,” he clarified, reassuring the community that the rightful ownership of the land is the primary issue at hand.
As the investigation continues, residents are left seeking justice and a resolution to the ongoing land conflicts that have severely impacted their livelihoods.
