Veteran Journalist Ruth Nesoba Leaves BBC After 20 Years


Esteemed Kenyan journalist and British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) news editor Ruth Nesoba has officially announced her departure from the global media giant after nearly 20 years of dedicated service.

In a reflective and heartfelt message shared on her LinkedIn account on Sunday, May 25, Nesoba revealed that she is stepping away from her role to embark on a new professional journey.

She expressed deep gratitude for the friendships, experiences, and professional growth she gained during her time at the BBC.

“After close to two decades, it’s time to hang up my trusted editor’s hat at the BBC and embark on a new journey,” she wrote.

Ruth described her tenure at the BBC as “a masterclass in resilience, creativity, and teamwork,” having worked on major news deployments and collaborated with top-tier journalists and storytellers across the globe.

Her work significantly contributed to impactful storytelling across Africa and beyond.

She also announced plans to take a short personal break before joining a new organization in June 2025, where she will focus on leading teams in producing compelling visual narratives that highlight African stories.

Following her announcement, media colleagues and industry peers lauded Ruth’s leadership and professionalism.

Ruth Nesoba held several pivotal roles at the BBC, including Regional News Editor for BBC World Service, News Diary and Planning Editor for East Africa, and Producer for BBC Africa. Before joining the BBC, she worked at leading Kenyan media houses, including Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) and Nation Media Group (NMG).

Her academic background is equally impressive. She holds:

  • A Master of Arts in Language Interpretation and Translation from the University of Nairobi
  • A Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Media Studies from the same institution
  • A Diploma in Mass Media Communication (TV & Radio Production) from the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC)
  • A Diploma in Purchasing, Procurement/Acquisitions, and Contracts Management from Kenya College of Communication Technology (KCCT)

Ruth’s exit comes just months after fellow Kenyan journalist Ian Wafula stepped down from his position as BBC Africa Security Correspondent in February 2025, signaling a season of transition within the BBC’s Africa team.

As Ruth Nesoba turns the page to a new chapter, her legacy remains firmly rooted in her commitment to impactful journalism and her role in shaping narratives that reflect the richness and complexity of Africa.
