Residents of Vihiga County are in shock and mourning following the sudden death of Ezekiel Maleya Ayiego, the county’s Secretary.
Reports indicate that Ayiego, who had shown no signs of illness, collapsed and died on Tuesday evening shortly after having his supper.
His unexpected passing has left the community in grief.
Vihiga County Governor Wilber Ottichilo confirmed the sad news and expressed his deep sorrow at the loss.
In a statement, he described Ayiego’s death as a significant blow to both his immediate family and the county.
“It is with great sadness that I have learned of the passing of Ezekiel Maleya Ayiego, who was serving as the County Secretary and Head of County Public Service at the time of his death,” the governor said.
Governor Ottichilo paid a heartfelt tribute to Ayiego, describing him as a dedicated and resourceful individual who worked tirelessly to improve the lives of those around him.
“Ayiego, who passed away unexpectedly at his residence, was a committed administrator, educator, and a dear friend to me and many others,” the governor lamented.
Born on October 20, 1967, in Ingidi village, Lugaga Wamuluma Ward in Vihiga County, Ayiego had a distinguished career in education before transitioning into public service.
He served as the principal of Chesamisi High School from 2018 to 2021, having previously held leadership positions at Vihiga Boys High School, Ingotse High School, Friends High School Kigama, and Lwanda Secondary School.
He also taught at Sunshine High School, Musingu High School, and Namirama Girls High School.
In addition to his work in education, Ayiego was actively involved in the Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESSHA), serving as the vice organizing secretary from 2018.
At the time of his death, Ayiego was serving as the County Secretary and Head of Public Service for Vihiga County, where he was known for his efficiency and dedication.
Governor Ottichilo recalled working closely with Ayiego on several reforms within the county public service, praising his professionalism and commitment.
“Ezekiel served as a highly efficient County Secretary in my administration, and we worked together to reform the Vihiga County Public Service,” Governor Ottichilo said.
“On behalf of my family, the County Government staff, and the people of Vihiga, I extend my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Ezekiel Maleya Ayiego.”
