Wetang’ula refutes false claims on MP Ferdinand Wanyonyi’s death, confirms he Is under treatment in India

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has dismissed circulating rumours claiming that Kwanza Constituency MP Ferdinand Wanyonyi has died.

Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, December 4, Wetang’ula condemned the false reports as malicious and insensitive, assuring the country that the legislator is alive and currently undergoing treatment in India.

The Speaker explained that Wanyonyi had been admitted to Nairobi Hospital for about a month before doctors recommended that he be flown to India for specialised care.

He added that the MP is accompanied by his wife and daughter, who have been supporting him throughout his treatment.

“I want to clarify that Hon. Ferdinand Wanyonyi is unwell. He was in Nairobi Hospital for about a month, and doctors recommended that we take him to India,” Wetang’ula stated.

He further noted that he had spoken directly with Wanyonyi via a conference call on Thursday morning and confirmed that the MP was responding well to treatment.

The Clerk of the National Assembly also held a similar call with the ailing legislator shortly after.

Wetang’ula urged Kenyans to refrain from spreading unverified information, condemning individuals peddling the false reports as “evil rumour mongers” intent on causing unnecessary panic.

“He is now in India. Yesterday, I had a conference call with him and his spouse, and this morning the National Assembly Clerk did the same,” he said.

“I am saying this to send a message to the evil rumour mongers claiming he has passed on and that we are hiding information.”

Wanyonyi, a member of the Departmental Committee on Agriculture, has been absent from parliamentary proceedings for some time, prompting concern among members of the public.

He retained his Kwanza parliamentary seat in both the 2017 and 2022 general elections under FORD–Kenya, which later merged with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
