President William Ruto’s Nigerian son-in-law, Dr Alexander Ezenagu, attracted attention after making a rare public appearance during Charlene Ruto’s traditional engagement ceremony.
Ezenagu attended the colourful Koito ceremony alongside his wife, June Ruto, as the Ruto family gathered at Intona Farm in Kilgoris to celebrate Charlene and her Tanzanian fiancé, Isaya Yunge.
The ceremony, held over the weekend, brought together members of the First Family and guests for an important cultural milestone.
The event followed Kalenjin traditions and formally marked a significant stage in Charlene and Yunge’s relationship.
Ezenagu joins the Ruto family celebrations
Although Ezenagu has become part of Kenya’s most prominent political family through his marriage to June, he generally maintains a relatively low public profile.
His appearance at Charlene’s Koito therefore offered a glimpse of the wider Ruto family coming together for the occasion.
President Ruto later shared family photographs from the event, with Ezenagu pictured alongside June, the president and First Lady Rachel Ruto.

Charlene’s ceremony has attracted considerable public attention partly because of the importance attached to Koito within Kalenjin culture.

Who is Alexander Ezenagu?
Away from his connection to the Ruto family, Ezenagu has established himself as a legal scholar and specialist in international taxation, commercial law, trade and investment.
He studied law at the University of Ibadan in Nigeria before pursuing a Master’s degree in Commercial Law at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom.
He later obtained a Doctor of Civil Law degree from McGill University in Canada.
His professional background includes academia, legal research and international trade policy.
He previously served as an assistant professor of taxation and commercial law at Hamad Bin Khalifa University in Qatar.
His expertise has also taken him into the area of African economic integration, where his work has focused on trade, investment and taxation.
His role at Strathmore University
Ezenagu’s professional career in Kenya received another boost in 2023 when Strathmore University Business School appointed him as a Senior Research Fellow and the inaugural director of its African Continental Free Trade Agreement Policy and Development Hub.
According to Strathmore, the centre was established to strengthen research and knowledge around trade and investment across Africa.
The university described Ezenagu as an expert in international law, trade, investment and taxation.
The appointment highlighted a side of Ezenagu that is separate from his association with Kenya’s First Family.
His academic career has centred largely on complex issues affecting international business, taxation and Africa’s economic integration.
Marriage to June Ruto
Ezenagu first became widely known to the Kenyan public after his relationship with June Ruto became public.
The couple held traditional marriage-related celebrations in 2021 before their wedding later that year.
Their ceremonies incorporated elements from both Kenyan and Nigerian traditions, reflecting their different cultural backgrounds.
June is President Ruto and Rachel Ruto’s eldest daughter.
Her marriage to Ezenagu consequently brought the Nigerian academic into the wider public spotlight.
Since then, Ezenagu has occasionally appeared at important family occasions and official events, although he has largely kept his personal life away from the intense publicity that surrounds the First Family.
