Police in Kirinyaga County have arrested a 40-year-old woman suspected of fatally stabbing her 52-year-old lover during a dispute at a local bar in Muragara Trading Centre, Ndia Sub-County, on Christmas Day.
Kirinyaga West (Ndia) Sub-County Police Commander Jos Mudavadi confirmed that detectives apprehended the suspect, identified as Edith Muthoni, after tracing her to a hideout in Kandegwa village.
According to police, she had gone into hiding following the incident and is currently being held at Baricho Police Station as investigations continue.
Authorities said the suspect and the deceased, Peter Mwangi Wanyeki, had spent much of Christmas Day together before an argument broke out at an entertainment spot in Muragara.
Witnesses reported that the dispute allegedly arose over a sh.60 alcohol bill and quickly escalated.
Police stated that during the altercation, the suspect allegedly grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed Wanyeki in the chest.
The knife was reportedly being used for food preparation during Christmas celebrations at the bar.
Wanyeki died at the scene, leaving his family devastated. Relatives said they were celebrating Christmas in the village when they received news of his death.
Family members described him as a well-known driver who supported many people in the community and expressed relief following the suspect’s arrest, saying they hope justice will be served.
Police have since moved the body to a local mortuary as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident continue.
