16-year-old boy shot dead by gunman in Meru

A 16-year-old boy was shot dead by an unidentified gunman in the Selenite area of Meru County while returning from purchasing miraa with two friends.

The deceased was reportedly attacked on Saturday, October 24, 2026, as the trio returned from Gitimbine, where they had gone to buy the stimulant plant.

Police said the three were approaching the Selenite area when they were intercepted by a man who questioned them before allegedly drawing a firearm and shooting at them.

The teenagers reportedly fled in different directions to escape the attack.

They later received information from a boda boda rider that Munene had been injured.

Police officers responded to the incident and upon arrival, officers found Munene’s body lying at the scene, with an apparent gunshot wound and an exit wound on his chest.

Investigators also noted a trail of blood a short distance from where the body was found, raising the possibility that the location was a secondary crime scene.

Scenes of Crime personnel processed and documented the area as detectives began investigations into the suspected murder.

The body was moved to Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a post-mortem examination.

Police are yet to establish the motive for the shooting or identify the suspected gunman.

Meanwhile, the body of an unidentified man estimated to be about 30 years old has been retrieved from River Migori in Migori County.

The body was spotted floating in the river within Apida area before members of the public retrieved it to the riverbank.

Police officers visited the scene following a report by Suna Central Location Chief Edwin Onga’yo.

A preliminary examination revealed that the body had bruises and a swollen head, injuries police said could be consistent with contact with rocks in the river.

However, the circumstances surrounding the man’s death had not been established by the time the body was recovered.

Scenes of Crime personnel processed the scene before the body was moved to Migori County Referral Hospital mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a post-mortem examination and identification.
