The fashion world is already divided months before the 2027 Met Gala after organizers announced that legendary but controversial British designer John Galliano will be the inspiration behind next year’s prestigious event.
The announcement has triggered an intense online debate, with many questioning whether one of fashion’s biggest celebrations should honor a designer whose career was derailed by antisemitic remarks that shocked the world more than a decade ago.
According to reports, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute will stage an exhibition titled “John Galliano: Horizons,” which will officially open on May 9, 2027, shortly after the annual Met Gala.
The exhibition will run until January 9, 2028 and will showcase Galliano’s remarkable four-decade career in fashion while also confronting the scandal that nearly destroyed his legacy.
Why is John Galliano so controversial?
Galliano is widely regarded as one of the greatest fashion designers of his generation.
He transformed luxury fashion during his time at Givenchy and later Dior, where his dramatic runway presentations and theatrical couture collections made him one of the industry’s most influential creative minds.
However, his glittering career came crashing down in 2011 after videos surfaced showing him making antisemitic and racist remarks in a Paris café while intoxicated.
Among the comments, Galliano declared, “I love Hitler,” leading to global outrage.
He was immediately fired by Dior, dismissed from his own fashion label and later convicted by a French court for making public insults based on race and religion.
A remarkable comeback
Following years away from the spotlight, Galliano entered rehabilitation and publicly apologized for his actions, attributing much of his behavior to severe alcohol and drug addiction.
In 2014, he made an unexpected return to fashion after becoming creative director at Maison Margiela.
Over the next decade, he rebuilt his reputation through critically acclaimed couture collections that once again earned praise from fashion critics and celebrities alike.
Stars including Zendaya, Kim Kardashian, Amal Clooney and Tyla have continued wearing Galliano’s creations, while vintage Galliano pieces have become some of the most sought-after items in luxury fashion auctions.
Anna Wintour stands firmly behind Galliano
One of Galliano’s strongest supporters has been Vogue global editorial director Anna Wintour, who reportedly played a key role in championing the exhibition.
Wintour defended the decision by saying Galliano’s career should not be defined by one dark chapter.
“There is no one more deserving of an exhibition of this scale,” she said, praising his extraordinary creativity and lasting influence on modern fashion.
Jewish leaders consulted before announcement
Aware of the backlash the decision could trigger, organizers reportedly spent months consulting prominent Jewish leaders before making the announcement public.
According to reports, Wintour, Galliano and Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton held meetings with rabbis and representatives from Jewish organizations to discuss concerns surrounding the exhibition.
Some community leaders acknowledged Galliano’s efforts to seek forgiveness and educate himself about antisemitism, while others argued that honoring him at such a high-profile event sends the wrong message at a time when antisemitic incidents remain a growing concern worldwide.

Galliano will become only the third living designer to receive a solo exhibition at the Costume Institute, joining fashion icons Yves Saint Laurent and Rei Kawakubo.
