23-Year-Old Man Arrested Over Brutal Killing of Molo Form Four Student

A 23-year-old man suspected of killing 18-year-old Form Four student Joy Wangui in Molo, Nakuru County, has been arrested after a sustained manhunt by detectives.

The suspect, identified as Walter Kipkoech, was arrested in Lagwenda village, Kuresoi North, where detectives from Molo, working alongside officers from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) at the Regional Criminal Investigations Headquarters in the Rift Valley, traced him to a hideout.

Kipkoech had allegedly gone into hiding shortly after Wangui was found dead at her family home in the Kiambaa area of Moto Location.

Student found dead at family home

The case has shocked residents of Molo because of the circumstances surrounding the death of the teenager, who was a Form Four student at Molo Secondary School.

According to police reports, Wangui was discovered dead on Sunday, October 4, after her brother, who had briefly gone to a nearby shop, returned home.

Investigators who arrived at the scene found the teenager dead inside the house. The incident prompted a detailed forensic investigation as detectives sought to establish what had happened and identify the person responsible.

Local reports indicated that the suspect was known to the family and was believed to have been in a relationship with the deceased.

Preliminary investigations consequently turned to a possible relationship dispute as detectives sought to establish the motive.

Detectives launch manhunt

Following the killing, Kipkoech reportedly fled the area, prompting detectives to launch a search for him.

The manhunt eventually led officers to Lagwenda village in Kuresoi North, where they located and arrested him.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations said the arrest followed sustained efforts by detectives to trace the suspect and piece together circumstances surrounding Wangui’s death.

At the time of his arrest, detectives reportedly found Kipkoech wearing clothing bearing stains that investigators believed could be linked to the incident.

He was subsequently escorted to Molo Police Station, where he is being processed ahead of his expected arraignment.

Relationship angle under investigation

Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances that preceded Wangui’s death, with a possible relationship dispute forming part of the preliminary inquiry.

A message reportedly found inside the house has also become part of the investigation. However, detectives are expected to subject all available evidence to forensic examination as they establish who wrote the message and the events leading to the teenager’s death.

Earlier reports from the scene said investigators recovered several items believed to be relevant to the case and preserved them as exhibits.

The body was subsequently moved to the Molo Sub-County Hospital mortuary, pending a postmortem examination.

Residents shocked

The killing left residents of Kiambaa and the wider Molo area shocked, with neighbours describing Wangui as a young woman with a promising future.

Speaking to the local daily following the incident, local residents called for the suspect to be brought to justice and urged young people experiencing relationship difficulties to seek guidance rather than resorting to violence.

Police had initially launched a manhunt after identifying Kipkoech as a key suspect. Reports published on October 5 indicated that he had fled and was yet to be apprehended at the time.

His subsequent arrest now marks a significant development in the investigation.

DCI vows to pursue justice

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has expressed condolences to Wangui’s family, relatives and friends as investigators continue working to establish the full circumstances surrounding her death.

The agency said it remains committed to ensuring that evidence is thoroughly examined and that anyone found responsible faces the law.

Kipkoech is expected to be presented in court as investigators continue gathering evidence. His arrest does not amount to a conviction, and the prosecution will be required to establish its case through the legal process.

As detectives continue piecing together the events surrounding the killing, Wangui’s family awaits answers and justice for the Form Four student whose life was cut short before she could complete her secondary education.
