Twenty-eight people were arrested following violent protests in Nairobi’s Eastleigh area after a water bowser struck and seriously injured a pedestrian along Muratina Road.
The incident occurred on Monday, October 19, 2026, at around 5:30 p.m. near Hildaya Mosque, as the Isuzu water bowser travelled from Pumwani towards Mlango Kubwa Roundabout.
According to police, the vehicle hit Mbondo Munyao, a 33-year-old man, leaving him with multiple fractures to his legs.
The accident triggered anger among members of the public, who reportedly became unruly and forced the driver to flee, abandoning the vehicle at the scene.
The situation escalated when some members of the crowd set the water bowser on fire, sparking chaos along the busy road.
Police officers from Eastleigh North, Mathare and Pangani police stations, alongside Quick Response Teams (QRT), were deployed to contain the unrest.
The officers reportedly faced a hostile crowd that threw stones and other objects at them as they attempted to restore order.
The situation was brought under control at around 9 p.m., according to the report.
The injured pedestrian was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, the burnt vehicle was towed to Pangani Traffic Base pending further police action.
Crime Scene Investigation personnel photographed and documented the scene as part of the inquiry into the incident.
Police later arrested 28 people during an operation following the unrest. Investigations into the accident, the destruction of the vehicle and the ensuing violence are expected to continue.
