A three-year-old girl drowned after she was left behind while playing with her cousins near a river in Kitutu Central Sub-County, Kisii County.
Police said the minor was playing with her four-year-old twin cousins near the banks of River Mogusi at Bototo (A) Village in Raganga Sub-location on Thursday afternoon.
According to police, the children were playing near the river at about 1pm when the twins returned home, which is about 200 metres away, leaving the deceased behind.
Their aunt questioned the boys about the girl’s whereabouts, and they told her she had remained at the river. She immediately accompanied the children back to the scene where the girl’s body was found in the water.
Police visited the scene and documented the incident.
The child’s body was retrieved and taken to the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Police have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the drowning and urged parents and guardians to closely supervise young children, especially around rivers and other water bodies.
And police launched investigations after the body of an unidentified elderly man was recovered from the Ruiru River in Juja Sub-County, Kiambu County.
The incident was reported on Thursday evening after a resident alerted police that a body was floating in the river at the Canaan area.
With the assistance of members of the public, the police retrieved the body of an unidentified man believed to be about 65 years old.
Police said the body was badly decomposed and appeared to have been swept downstream from an unknown location upstream, making immediate identification difficult.
The scene was processed and documented by CSI officers before the body was moved to the General Kago Funeral Home, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination and identification.
Investigations are ongoing to establish the identity of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding his death.
