Two houses were set on fire in Nyabeda sub-location, Yala, Siaya County, after a 7-year-old boy was found murdered in Onono village on Thursday morning.
The houses were torched by angry villagers at the home of Dominic Odhiambo, whose son was linked to the death of Michael Owino Alumba.
The boy’s body was discovered dumped in a nearby bush.
Nyabeda sub-location Assistant Chief Tom Aruwa confirmed that the boy had been missing since Wednesday evening and was found dead the following morning.
This discovery led to the villagers storming Odhiambo’s home, destroying property and setting fire to two houses.
Initial investigations suggest that Odhiambo’s son was previously caught stealing bananas from the farm of the murdered boy’s father.
After being warned to stop, it is believed he abducted Michael before killing him in retaliation.
The police have since visited the scene and taken the body to Yala sub-county hospital for further examination.
A manhunt for the suspect, who remains at large, is underway.
Assistant Chief Aruwa urged the public to avoid taking the law into their own hands, emphasizing the importance of using proper channels to resolve disputes.
