80 goats allegedly die after drinking water from Marsabit well

About 80 goats are reported to have died after drinking water from a well in Dukana, Marsabit County.

Police however said the deaths could not be independently verified.

The incident was reported at Dukana Police Station on Tuesday, October 6, after the animals allegedly died on Monday shortly after drinking water from Tula Well.

Police said no carcasses were found at the scene, making it impossible to independently verify the reported death of the 80 goats. Only fresh paunch contents were observed.

Local informants claimed that the carcasses had been scavenged by hyenas overnight.

The alleged livestock owners were identified as Kosa Ramata Huka, 32, Godana Ramata Huka, 28, and Hilo Huka, 20.

Residents also reported that a similar incident occurred at the same well in 2019, when about 90 cattle allegedly died after consuming water from the well.

Residents have been cautioned against drawing or consuming water from the well for both human and animal use until it is tested and confirmed safe.

The area veterinary officer has been notified and further investigations are expected to establish whether the water was responsible for the reported livestock deaths.

It is not clear what caused the deaths, police said amid investigations.

The area is among those affected by fighting over pasture and other resources. This leads to deaths of humans and livestock.
